A Coronation fit for a queen awaits on Friday at Royal Ascot, and the plot has thickened in grand fashion with the late addition of Falakeyah, setting up a tantalising showdown with the French flyer Zarigana.

Unbeaten and unbowed, Owen Burrows’ filly lit up Newmarket with a sparkling win in the Pretty Polly last month — a performance that had her connections dreaming of classic glories, be it at Epsom or Chantilly. But fate had other ideas. First, the Oaks was ruled out. Then, a dirty scope scratched her from the Prix de Diane. Now, the stage is set for a return to a mile — and a shot at Group One glory on home soil.

“Jim’s been saying all spring she’s got plenty of speed,” said Shadwell’s racing manager Angus Gold. And speed she showed in abundance on her seasonal bow. With the stamina test shelved and the French window missed, the Coronation Stakes has become the chosen path — and connections believe Falakeyah is back to her brilliant best.

Standing in her way, though, is a filly bred in the purple and building a fearsome reputation: Zarigana, the granddaughter of the mighty Zarkava, and already a classic winner of sorts after being handed the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches in the stewards’ room at ParisLongchamp following a bruising duel with Shes Perfect.

Shes Perfect herself still holds an entry, though all eyes suggest she’s bound for Chantilly on Sunday instead, while Aidan O’Brien keeps his classic cards close to his chest — Bedtime Story and Merrily both standing their ground. He could yet unleash Exactly and January, too, for a Ballydoyle battalion not to be taken lightly.

Ralph Beckett has Chantilly Lace confirmed — a solid fifth in the 1000 Guineas — though she was outdone at Newmarket by Flight and Simmering, second and third to Desert Flower, and both hoping to leave behind underwhelming runs in the Irish equivalent.

Further strength comes from Joseph Murphy’s gritty Cercene and Archie Watson’s improving Duty First, both Curragh-placed and clearly trending the right way.

And just to keep punters guessing, two more late entries spice the dish: Falakeyah, of course, but also the unbeaten Kon Tiki, a £46,000 York scorer for Jane Chapple-Hyam, making the leap into the deep end with confidence.

Ger Lyons’ Red Letter rounds out a captivating cast of 15. Each with a story, each with a shot — and the Coronation Stakes looking like the crown jewel in Ascot’s royal week.
